Lathes and Turning / cnc lathe 2 tools
« on: December 26, 2023, 21:12:11 pm »
Hi All...I have gotten great help her on other topics so now I am trying to see if it is possible to use 2 different tools on seperate axis  with a 1 inch difference between them, at  the same time at different positions of lathe z axis travel. The whole concept is one pass as the part will pass through a bearing as steady rest.
So it would be like running 2 profiles at the same time from same geometry but with 2nd profile starting 1 inch after first ..Impossible?

Thanks for any help

Thanks!! what was and still confuses me a bit is the large flat area...was not expecting that...I guess I could make adjustments...create file and bring back gcode to confirm correct shape?

Thanks again!!

Hi David...I got a little lost here..in attached file I am not setting something up right but I am not sure what it is ...is there a limit on how curved a rotating piece can be? i did a much smaller piece and it seemed to be good after actually cutting.
Thanks for any help...

Rick

I am so glad I found this...I was trying in freecad but it was super slow other than a very small piece would always always get hung up and not complete...this is a different method I suppose ....not sure why they would not take the same approach but I am so glad and grateful to you that you have accomplished this....I am planning on making furniture that is characterized by all parts having little or no flat areas..not being able to easily make gcode  for these parts would be a huge problem...I think that is the issue for them..dealing with meshes...I am not really up on these things but your method proves superior...

Thanks again!!!!

Hi David,

thanks so much for your help...i don't want to wear you out but i'm having a problem merging the two snippets you sent..as I said i am just beginning to learn this...if you have time could you put them together?

I feel so stupid but I have learned before that there is no other way to learn..

Is it possible to set the various profile properties (Tool dia etc)for each profile in the same script...layer names will be consistent..

Sorry for lack of clarity..In the attached file I would like to do both Profile operations with one script..so I guess the question is how to do more than the one that is in the script "mop-automate.py"?

Thanks for your reply..
