Latest News / Forum upgrades coming soon!
« on: April 04, 2020, 00:23:36 am »
Hello everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and well!

The forum has long been overdue an upgrade to the latest software versions, so I am happy to announce a preview of that upgrade...

edit: updated forum now live
https://cambamcnc.com/forum/

This is a READ ONLY snapshot of the forum taken yesterday.
Any changes made to it will be lost when we migrate the latest forum data over.

* New Template!  The old one didn't work well with the new forum code, hence the new look.

* New E-Mailer!  Forum emails will now come from noreply@cambamcnc.com with DNS entries setup to
hopefully reduce rejected emails.

* Inline Video Supported!  Simply enter a [url] tag to a hosted mp4,avi, or youtube link and a preview will be rendered within the message.  Other video servers can be enabled if requested.

* HTTPS webserver now used.

If anything looks wonky or if there are any other suggestions for improvements, please let me know!

If everything looks OK, the plan is to upgrade the live forum over Monday 6th April.

Many thanks for your feedback and once again a huge thank you for making the CamBam forum such a great place!  :)

Regards

Andy

PS - if anyone has been receiving odd notification emails from the new email address while we have been testing, I am very sorry about that! (...it has been a long week)  :-[

Latest News / CamBam 1.0 is now the official production release
« on: March 26, 2020, 12:10:10 pm »
Hello everyone.  I hope everyone is keeping safe and well!

CamBam 1.0 is now finally the official production release.

https://cambamcnc.com/downloads/

This is the same as the V1.0 rc3 release that has been under testing, with an additional bugfix for the resize dialog problem.

I will update the online version checker once we are confident there are no major issues with this release.

There is also a 64bit version of CamBam available under the development downloads...
https://cambamcnc.com/downloads/#devt

Note! If there are incompatibilities with existing plugins, these will need to be recompiled for x64 platforms.

The next development CamBam version V1.1 is also well under way and will be tackling problems and adding new features, which require more extensive work than could safely go into V1.0.
More info regarding that soon!

A huge thank you to everyone for testing, feedback and keeping the CamBam community such a creative and supportive place.

Regards

Andy

Latest News / CamBam plus V1.0 (rc-3)
« on: October 21, 2019, 12:45:20 pm »
Another new CamBam release V1.0 (rc-3) is available...

http://cambamcnc.com/downloads/#devt
and for Linux...
http://cambamcnc.com/ref/ref.linux

Release notes...

Notable changes in this release:

Mostly bug fixes, but a happy outcome while working on these, I have rewritten some code which appears to have resulted in tool path generation performance increases of roughly 20-30%.  For example, the skull-big-foam.cb sample, the last 'additive' machining operation went from ~54s to ~28s duration to calculate toolpaths.
Holding tab recalculation times should also be improved.

There is a new Display : Selected Entity Focus config setting.
Setting to False will prevent the layers auto expanding when a drawing object is selected.
Selecting objects and pressing CTRL+TAB will toggle the parent layers expanded/collapsed.

Another shortcut key - CTRL+L now opens the align window.

For Ubuntu / Mono users having lock up / hanging issues when using File - Open, the default mono behaviour is now to not use a background worker thread when opening files, which should prevent these lock ups.
There is a new config option File Open Worker Thread.  Setting this to True will revert to the old work thread behaviour (the same as the Windows default).

Again, to reiterate the rc-1 notes...

Quote
The rc-3 tag denotes 'release candidate', which implies that, at long last, we nearing the point of making V1.0 the recommended production release.

The main aim of this release has been to work through remaining bugs and issues, particularly where these prevented moving over from 0.9.8

If you are yet to try V1.0 we recommend doing so.
If there are issues with this release preventing you from moving from 0.9.8, please let us know!

Note, V1.0 and 0.9.8 can be installed on the same computer and run in parallel.
Version 1.0 now requires the .NET framework version 4 to installed.

Thank you again for your support, feedback and patience while we work to make this the best CamBam release yet!

Thank you again for the great feedback!

Another new CamBam release V1.0 (rc-2) is available...

http://cambamcnc.com/downloads/#devt
and for Linux...
http://cambamcnc.com/ref/ref.linux

Release notes...

Notable changes in this release:

More work on the gcode output file prompting behaviour (as discussed in this thread)

Some more Mono tweaks and fixes...
Added new config options 'Menu Font Family' and 'Menu Font Size'.  This should hopefully mean no longer avoiding later libmono releases that included larger hard coded font sizes.

File open now also filters for capitalized file extensions (so .DXF and .dxf will match... but not DxF <- just wrong! )

The offline help files are now included in the linux program downloads.

I have also added a script 'install-launcher.sh' to the program folder the create a program launcher.
I am still looking for a reliable way to set the .cb file extension handling, but once the launcher is created, it just requires a few clicks on a .cb file to set the default program as the new program launcher.

Just to reiterate the rc-1 notes...

Feature Requests / Machining Out File behaviour and defaults
« on: September 27, 2019, 12:40:12 pm »
Improvements are needed as to how the default gcode out file behaviour is handled, including how and when the file is prompted and the default gcode folder displayed.

This one has come up a couple of times...
http://www.cambam.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=4325.0
http://www.cambam.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=7470.0

There were some changes made in the latest V1.0 rc-1 release, but its not quite there yet.

Here are a couple of changes I am proposing to add to the next update, so any comments and feedback is welcome.

Proposal 1

Remove the drawing template logic that currently clears the Machining - Out File property when creating a new drawing from the template.
I think this is just a carry over from the days before the {$cbfile.name} macro and relative file path checking were added.  Before those were added, anything in the template's gcode outfile property was likely not wanted.

Taking out this code will allow storing default gcode paths in the template files.

I think this is a better option that adding a single default gcode path in the system config.
(although this hasn't been totally ruled out)

So you could have different templates with Out File values such as ...

gcode\{$cbfile.name}.nc
X:\laser\{$cbfile.name}\{$cbfile.name}.nc
X:\mill\{$cbfile.name}\{$cbfile.name}.nc
\\plasma-machine\gcode\{$cbfile.name}\{$cbfile.name}.nc
etc

Proposal 2

A system config setting [GCode Generation] - GCode Out File Prompt - If Exists / Always / Never
If Exists (like it behaves now)
Always (sounds like some people would appreciate this)
Never (just overwrite existing files without prompting - unless the target folder doesn't exist)

Proposal 3

Add a prompt to 'Create output folder: <folder name> ?' if the target path does not already exist.

This is useful if your template out file property is something like:
X:\gcode\{$cbfile.name}\{$cbfile.name}.nc
...it would get a bit tedious creating this sub folder manually each time.

These changes allow, a default gcode name to be stored in the drawing template, with alternative targets for different templates.

If the out file property contains a sub folder that does not exist, prompt to create this.

The amount of filename prompting should be configurable and the default folder paths shown should in most cases be in the required location.

Have I missed anything?

Latest News / CamBam plus V1.0 (Linux development release)
« on: January 05, 2017, 21:58:00 pm »
The new V1 alpha is now available for Linux...

http://www.cambam.info/ref/ref.linux#devt

Just to repeat the Windows announcement...

Warning! This release is still in the early stages of public testing.
All gcode output should be treated with caution!
We do not recommend using this version for production work until it has undergone more testing and reached 'release candidate' stage.

The new version should follow the same installation instruction as 0.9.8.

Like the new Windows CamBam V1.0, the binaries and system folders will install into new directions, so it should be OK to run 0.9.8 and V1.0 on the same system.

I am interested to hear if the new triangulation library is behaving under Linux (and Windows)...
This can be tested by opening the 'klannimate.cb' sample.  If you can see the 'Mr Crabby' robot, then so far so good.
If errors are reported then there may be missing or incompatible dependencies and I will have to try harder!   :)

The new Windows script editor is currently not available under Mono, so there is just a boring old monchrome jobby until I can port that over or come up with an alternative.  Both Windows and Mono versions will be getting some improvements to the script editing in coming releases.

I have not been able to test this release using OpenGL yet as I need to rebuild some test systems for that, so I also interested in hearing any feedback regarding that.

Once again, thank you all for your patience and support while waiting for the new CamBam development releases.

I hope you all have a great new year and happy machining!

Latest News / Apology and Update
« on: September 22, 2015, 09:18:30 am »
Hello CamBam users!

I am hugely sorry for the lack of updates and status.  You all deserve much better so we are working hard to improve this.

I have been a bit reticent to make any announcements and promises of progress, as whenever I do, something unexpected seems to come and derail best laid plans. But importantly; CamBam / HexRay and 10Bulls are all very much alive and kicking and looking forward to a long future together with many updates and improvements to come!

A new ‘latest stable’ release (version 0.9.8P) is about to be released, later today.
This is pretty much the current beta release with a few fixes in place.
After this, I will make some announcements on up-coming releases and status of developments.

I would like to extend another huge thank you to everyone on the forum, for your patience and support.  You have turned a humble bit of code into a fabulous and inspiring community.  I just cannot say this enough, nor put my gratitude into words sufficiently to express it!
Also, an extra big thank you to David (DH42) for his continued support and hard work keeping the forum running smoothly!

Regards

Andy Payne

Scripts and Plugins / CamBam File Merge
« on: June 03, 2014, 09:47:03 am »
I have just added a new Python script to the reference section which can be used to merge multiple CamBam files into the current drawing...

http://www.cambam.info/ref/script.cbfilemerge

The script can merge files selected with a file open dialog, directory listings or hard coded lists.

All the primitive ID remapping is taken care of, so machining operations will still be linked to their correct drawing objects.

I hope someone finds this script useful!  :)
