.......Note that Fusion is a CAD software. It seems to me that the place where this may sometimes be needed is in the part design, in the CAD program, as your example. In a CAM program I see little utility for this.
Fusion also has CAM, not just CAD. They have a large user community and active forum. I had their free package and my interest was as an integrated CAD/CAM package. I don’t like their terms and business model, and as a casual user of both CAD & CAM, I didn't want the exposure to being financially bled or lose access to my own work, so CB and Alibre made more sense for me, …..so here I am.
I probably have a different perspective than all you CAM and gcode gurus, but if CAD features have no utility, then why have the standard CB CAD features and all the plugins been developed? -I’m quite grateful that they have. I really like CB!
I do realize the (original?) purpose of CB as I stated in the last sentence of my post #5. When I ask my pro manufacturing buds about CAM and mention CB, they just give me a funny look, and for the small portion of them that have ever even heard of it and respond, the comments usually go to the absence of capabilities, that according to them, would not allow them to be competitive.
At the price point of CB and presumably its target customer base, I would think the CAD features have extraordinary utility for that customer who has modest CAM needs and can avoid the cost of and learning curve of additional CAD software, and this would have significant value to CB’s commercial viability. Maybe I’m wrong about the target customer base…..dunno. If so I’m sure someone will set me straight on that.
For me, the available CB CAD features were sufficient for all my 2D & 2.5D machining design needs and it’s only my greater ambitions for complex design projects that led me to buy CAD software for the 3D modeling capability, otherwise, I would have been content with CB. So far I’ve been able to use CBs 3D CAM capabilities to execute cutting those 3D models just fine. -Still learning.
So yah, what I propose would be a CAD feature, but a useful one for anyone doing layout design work with components in mixed units within CB and values it as both CAD/CAM software. I’m not a coder, but seems like what I proposed would be relatively simple compared to some of the other plug ins and features.
Not trying to poke the bear fellas........just an opinion from a CB user, sample size of 1.
Best,
Kelly
