Members Machines / Videos!
« on: January 11, 2022, 18:23:49 pm »
I have a young fellow here at the shop today, filming and shooting 'stills' of the processes involved in cutting multi-shot plates.

IF my customer permits, I'll share them.

In any case, it's interesting.  He's catching angles on the machine I wouldn't have proposed, as well as those I would have.

CamBam help (General usage) / Embarrassed to ask, but, here goes...
« on: January 11, 2022, 15:39:54 pm »
David,
It's been most of a decade since I licensed CutViewer.  I need to move my copy to a newer machine and OS, but I've completely forgotten how to apply the license file (I have it both in .zip and file forms).  I've already installed CV, itself, just running it in the 'demo' mode, right now.

Can you remind me how to install CV with its license on my newer Windows system?

Thank you,
<blush>

Members Machines / Vacuum hold-down blowing the breaker
« on: January 05, 2022, 23:41:32 pm »
I have a 20HP vacuum pump for hold-downs on both of my 4x8 routers.  Yesterday, I was milling a new vacuum sheet for one of the machines, and the pump worked fine.

This morning, it wouldn't stay running for more than 30 minutes -- it blew its 100A breaker after 25-30 min.  This afternoon, the same (so, not an incoming voltage issue... about 243VAC, 60Hz).

Lacking a high-current ammeter loop for my meter (one ordered), I removed the breaker and ordered another.  They can fatigue with age and near-capacity current.  While it was apart, I did some exploring.

I tested the pump's rotor by hand.  It turns freely.  All the capacitors in the 2ph-to-3ph converter are 'oil' caps, and should not age; normally those last for decades.  I couldn't find anything obvious.

But, while it was 'down', anyway, I did a routine cleaning on the vacuum pump's in-line filter.  I was appalled!  It was full of MDF dust!  And it was clearly new dust, because it was loose and powdery, and still had it's color.  Hmmm...

It took nearly an hour to air-clean that filter, it was that-badly plugged-up.  It's not perfect, but worth testing.  I've ordered a new one.  But in the meanwhile, I re-installed it, and put the breaker back in the box, so I could test.

It ran fine for over an hour.  DARN!  'Simple problem, but not expected.

Find, in my last post to the prior 'help' thread, the solution to the problem.  It was an odd one!

When you need to use "F{$mop.plungefeedrate}" or "F{mop.cutfeedrate}", how do you make them modal, so they don't litter-up your g-code with unnecessary instructions?

Thanks.

Happy New Year, folks.  I look forward to a much-better year than the last two have been.

I hope you are, too!

Enjoy your evening.

Members Projects / A new 'learning curve'
« on: December 21, 2021, 18:42:23 pm »
I've never used a ball-nosed cutter in this PVC foam board I cut for fireworks manufacturers.  I don't know how it will behave.

We've had a problem, in that the 1/8" fuse we've been buying is no-longer available.  We've had to 'go back in time', and use 1/4" time fuse.  Of course, the fuse grooves are deeper, and they weaken the 3/4" stock we've used, too much.  One customer had a 'plate' completely blow out the bottom.

So, I'm going with thicker material (1"), and will be using a ball-nosed cutter for the groove, in order to lessen the stress points.  And, BOY, is that 1" stuff more-expensive than the 3/4"... almost double!!!

I guess we'll see, huh?

This is my 'project' for the day!  ;D

Since the time grows short, I wish all my friends who celebrate it a Merry Christmas, and the best for you in the coming new year.

Scripts and Plugins / Length of a curved line
« on: October 21, 2021, 20:13:06 pm »
Is there a script to measure the actual length of a curved line?

I have a 'special' rush-project that requires that I measure some curved lines, in order to make straight ones of the same total length.

Thanks, all!

Folks, my brother-in-law of age 70 passed today due to Covid-19.  Please, if you haven't yet gotten protected, GET the vaccine!  I don't need to lose any more friends to this nasty disease.

Members Machines / X-servo failure on new machine
« on: August 17, 2021, 17:17:07 pm »
My newer bed router just had the X servo driver fail.

Eh... I have two 48x96 (inch) machines, and the 20-year-old machine is still running fine.  But I've got to move the workpiece and the files to it!

Darn!

I JUST got some orders for some of the pyrotechnic 'plates' I make for the theme parks.

They even inquired on purchasing more material for future orders.  It looks like it might be "turning around".

Members Projects / Slide rules!
« on: July 24, 2021, 19:17:33 pm »
'Still cleaning out the barn attic, and I found a box with FIVE slide rules I used all through college.  Four still work fine.  One all-aluminum one is jammed, but can probably be repaired.

I'm going to make up a picture frame with the little 6-inch 'pocket model' Starrett that says,  (bed router job, so in the 'art')

"In case of total failure of electronics, Break Glass.  Pull slide and cursor."

<smile>

Thanks, all (Andy & maybe David?), for getting the forum back up.  You forget how much you need this site, until you cannot get to it for a couple of days!

Members Projects / Pyro-related work slowly returns
« on: July 07, 2021, 18:17:14 pm »
I now have two pyro-related tool issues to troubleshoot for clients this month.

The work slowly comes back.  These companies can't exist without automation of some processes.  I designed one of the machines, and the other I set up and 'tuned' for pyro applications.  So I'm well-familiar with both.

Some pyro companies folded during the Covid-19 crisis, but none of my regular clients did, and now they're calling for service.

It'll be some welcome income, in a 'drought' that has lasted over 14 months.
