I hope he performed a 'full image' backup immediately after having gotten the forum up again!
I'm not impugning him, because I don't know what issues he encountered. But it just seems like 72 hours is WAY too long for even a complete hardware replacement and 'dropback' to a good backup. Something else must've happened.
One of my ShopSabre 4x8 bed routers has a 2Tb drive. The system literally SMOKED during an unexpected 'popup' lightning storm. Fortunately, it didn't burn out the stepper motors, but I had to replace everything under the hood, including all three stepper interfaces. Then I had to drop back to my most recent (very recent) backup. The entire procedure took under eight hours.
I could have sped that further by keeping a 'clone' of the system, which I now do. No longer 'just a backup', I keep a complete working copy of both hardware and software, so all it would take is a physical 'swapout'. Periodically, I do image backups of the running system, and install them on the backup hardware.
That's the way I was taught to do it when I was working in the medical computers field. Surgeons can't wait for you to figure out problems. They need to be up and running NOW.
