Brown and Sharpe Dial Idicator Mw214
« on: July 10, 2023, 23:11:50 pm »
So I have had this jewel hanging around for a couple of years now and barely gave it a glance. So I have a need for it now to check the calibration on my axises. Low and behold .0005 increments and .5 throw. Well I check my little machine and it is working out OK .003 to .005 repeatability is what they are claiming right out of the box. Never did check it new but right now its running .0045. Not bad for a machine that's 7 years old and a bolt together kit. I am doing wood work for the most part and i would like to have the capability of doing some aluminium in the near future. That's what all the fuss is about when it comes to calibrating the mill out. I think that the dial indicator was an Ebay buy. Anyways i am happy with the machine and dial indicator. The machine is an Avid bolt together kit CRP 4848. Looks like it may work out. YEA!!!

That's a good question.  If the play is in the screw bushings rather than in the half-nuts, a couple of thin shims might get that down to a thou' or less!  If it's due to loose gibs on the carriage... well... just tighten them.

This system is rack and pinion. And thats a good question. I will run some files in the next few days and check.

If everything is snugged-up nicely (and discounting possible chatter) a rack & pinion drive will usually give dead-on-accurate travel in ONE direction or the other, but not both directions on the same job.
