End of the line?
« on: August 08, 2023, 21:08:18 pm »
I'm sort of 'guessing' this last three weeks is an indication we won't have this forum for much longer.  I hope Andy preserves the content in some sort of archival form, and that he preserves all the files folks have worked on over the years.

Hello

Forum files has been corrupted 3 times in a short time .. I don't know why (no feedback from Andy) but the website was not affected so the problem is not with the server itself.

Activity on this forum has been slower lately, sometimes several days without a post.

But...

1. CamBam still works
2. If David and/or Ralph would maintain a website for plugins that's fine.
3. Plugins could still be written
4. CNCzone has a CamBam section

The big problem is what Lloyd said, preserving the forum content.

My plugin site is there without any break and does not require registration.
But the plugins are there under German names and for English visitors it is surely not easy to find something.
The plugins are of course the original english plugins.
But of course the site makes constant work and also costs money. Next year CentOS Linux is EOL.
Whether I can then again take a lot of money in hand and have the time to rebuild everything with another operating system I currently do not know yet.

It's a miracle!
Fourth day in a row and the forum has not crashed. :)

On a serious note, it's a pity that so much effort and work is under the threat of vanishing.

The forum is not the latest script version.  It could be a security issue.  Versions often include bug fixes and security updates.

Also often a website hosted by a hosting service will access databases that are on a different server.  SMF forums uses a MySQL database to store all the data for the forums.  I no longer run any forums, but I ran a fishing related web forum for almost 20 years.  I think for more than half that time I ran SMF for the forum.

David

the forum software is a 2019 version (2.0.17).
This is already antique for a software. If the server software is kept at the same level there will be few problems.
However, if the server software receives updates, an incompatibility with, for example, PHP 8 is enough to bring a forum software into the skid. MySQL has also made advances that can create incompatibilities.

Hello Ralf,

Yes, and I also realized (yesterday  :-[) that no new users have joined the forum (nor spammers !) since the server crash at 10 June, certainly something is not working in the registration .. and I also no longer have mail alerts for new reply to a subject ... (nor other alert) It is the same for you ?

I warned Andy about this yesterday by mail.
