Convex lateral failed
« on: May 11, 2024, 18:15:00 pm »
Hi everyone Today I performed a convex lateral profile with a 3mm radius and a ball nose cutter, it didn't go well, the paths look ok on the monitor but the cut was as if the cutter radius hadn't been calculated, I should have understood it before. I want to ask, does Cambam take into account the cutter radius in this process? Or is it better to always use end mill cutter? Tomorrow I will add files and photos of the result. Thank you

Profile cuts do take into account the cutter radius, but they do not know how to account for the change in effective radius of the tool in a 'bowl' type cut with a ball-nose cutter.  Please show us the files.  This was recently discussed in another thread.

To me it seems CamBam did everything right.
You cannot extend radius of 1 mm to 3 mm depth.
It either should be 3 mm or if 1 mm fillet is desired you offset the outer shape curve -1 mm, apply the convex radius profile to it with depth only 1 mm. The smaller the depth increment, the smoother the shape. In some cases I've gone down to 0.03 mm DI.
I am using this approach to round edges sometimes.

But I also have a limited set of edge rounding cutters - 0.5 to 2 mm radius and they do a good job.

Thanks everyone, I'll do some practice, for the most important things I think next time I won't hesitate to use CAD. The important thing was to know if the cutter radius is calculated.
