first 3D/waterline job. (+cheeky request)
« on: October 06, 2024, 13:06:45 pm »

This is my first 3D sculpting job, a mate needs two replacement stool backs. The stock has been cut from pine on the table saw and the corners rounded on the sander.  It may not work because of the material but I want to try cutting the scallop on the CNC, there's a 6mm ball nose cutter in the tool list.

Either a simple cylindrical section as indicated by the middle arc, or a saddle type 2way curved surface roughly given by the 3 arcs.

Tips appreciated, eg do this, then this, then this.  And I half expect someone to knock out what's needed in 5mins (feel free to show off your skills). I want to learn, but also I want to get this task out the way :)

thanks,

Hello

3D machining needs a 3D objet ;) (STL, 3DS or STEP format) so you must first create this objet in your favorite 3D software.

https://cambamcnc.com/doc/1.0/tutorials/3d-profile.html

If it was a simple model (only one curve direction), you can do it with the "curved surface" plugin if you're not able to provide a full 3D model.

http://www.atelier-des-fougeres.fr/Cambam/Aide/Plugins/curved_surface.html

You can also use your 2D arc to extrude it to a 3D surface that can be machined with 3D profile mop

https://cambamcnc.com/doc/1.0/cad/draw-surface.html#extrude

But both can only give a curve in only one direction, so it is not exactly what you want. For a curve in multiple directions, only a 3D objet created in a external 3D soft can do the trick.

Thanks, I'll try the extrude and 3D mop toorrow.
