Mill Mage
« on: February 05, 2025, 17:20:52 pm »
I've been invited to beta test Lightburn's new cam software for mill/cnc.  I haven't read the Terms & Conditions yet, but if allowed update you guys on whether or not I think it's worth spending any time on.  I think even if details are required to be kept secret until it's released my general feel about it can be published.

If I have the time I'll be glad to show you a little in my shop.

Let us know how it works with 3D operations and 4 axes!

Oh well.  I guess I won't be able to tell you anything if I agree and start testing.

In other words, they're not receptive to ANY negative commentary, whatsoever.  Eh...

That's a too-restrictive agreement, from my perspective.  If they're afraid of negative comments (even about 'general perceptions), then they already KNOW it's not 'up to snuff'.

I withdrew from testing after playing with the software for a couple hours.  I won't say any more about it.

Oddly completely unrelated to their software I was no longer able to access the internet from my web browser after installing it, and purely 100% coincidentally was able to connect to the Internet after uninstalling it and rebooting my computer.  I was able to send email in the interrum however.  What a weird coincidence.

I have been working with Lightburn for years. I have had very good experiences with the company, especially when it comes to support. If a bug is found and published in the LB forum, it always takes only a few days for a response. Either it is promised (and kept) that the bug will be fixed in the next update, or a patch is released within a few days.
The support is as good as Andy's at his very best.
Lightburn can output GRBL code for lasers, you can theoretically already create 2.5D G-code programs with it.

I would be interested in testing MillMage. Is there a contact or a download address?
What do you mean by “Interrum”?

What I saw of MillMage was in the LBX livestream 2023, when the program could do as much as CamBam 0.8, 15 years ago. It just had a nicer interface in the style of Lightburn. Back then MillMage could only do GRBL and no G-Code.
I have hardly found any new information since then.

I can't tell you why I disagree with some of what you just said or why I decided it wasn't worth my time.  I can tell you. It was not because of their restrictive agreement about discussing it.

Interim means during the time between two events or periods.

Yes, I spelled it incorrectly the first time.

I can tell you the reason I have been evaluating other cam programs for the last year or two is that i'm looking for a replacement for cambam, and software that I spend more than a day evaluating must have at least the same capabilities as cambam.

I think that camban is literally the best bang for your buck except for the bugs.  Some of the bugs are pretty detrimental and not a single bug has been fixed in years.
