rc model wing
« on: February 13, 2025, 21:11:47 pm »
so if anyone who has helped me out here.. thanks ,, was wondering just what I am doing.. well .. building a new set of wings for a buddies rc model plane.. there are a couple hundred parts to be made .. I like to use freecad for the design work.. but it does not play well when it comes to the cam workbench.. it will not seperate the individual parts for machining.. so cambam allows me to take the parts and place them where I can make the most efficient use of my material.. as well copy paste to make duplicates for each wing.. cambam also allows me to do things freecad can not do..  as well cambam plays very nice with my mach3 and the 6040 flat bed..

Yep.  I've tried a number of low-cost and freeware CAM packages -- and a few 'not so low-cost'.  So far, none holds a candle to CamBam in terms of its versatility.  All the rest of them seem to 'lock' you into constraints that are not reasonable.  I'll keep running it until it won't, anymore!

I make a fair portion of my income doing machining and routing work, and CamBam plays a role in much of it.

Hello

For an efficient placement, you can use Deepnest with Cambam.

This is the author of the Path Workbench, here he shows how set up a job including how to move them around.

I think I'd still use Cambam for this job as it would be quicker and simpler.
Hope this helps.

I just saw the you tube link when I went to quote your message.. my security must have hidden it from me..

But anyway I just watched the video.. and yes that would work.. there are dozen's of guys working on this stuff.. and I wish I could possibly know everything they do.. it would make things so much better ..

like i told someone.. with freecad there are usually at least 2 maybe 3 ways to accomplish the same task... none of them are right or wrong..  he even mentions something like that in the video..

I have a small table top 3018 and for whacking out a couple small parts ,, freecad is great for that.. but with a more complex job like a wing.. part by part doesn't work well.. once the design is done then grab the sketches and export to dxf and jump into cambam..

cambam makes easy work from that point on even more so now that I have that import plugin..

Freecad is a great program.. and I have been using it since 14 I think.. we are now at 1.0 and the path workbench is no longer.. it is now called the cam workbench..

Now most of what the guy showed in the video is likely still the same or very similar.. but ver 1.0 brought a lot of changes.. by the time these guys manage to get a video out... it is already outdated..
