Open Source CamBam?
« on: September 08, 2024, 23:00:20 pm »
Just thinking out loud here...

CamBam is a great tool that is in need of some attention.  I purchased it over 12 years ago and still use it as my primary CAM tool.

I was wondering if Andy would sell his rights to the source code (assuming it is all unencumbered and Andy holds those exclusive rights) for a price he would set.  It seems like a win-win.  Andy has likely recouped all of his development time in the license fees over the years, and could possibly have a windfall greater than any future sales.

A crowd funding could be established to meet that goal, and if it succeeded, CamBam would be released as open source under GPL. Word could be spread of the initiative on social media, hackaday, slashdot, etc.

At least one precedent has been set, Blender was once closed source and now prospers as open source.

Thoughts?  Has anyone ever pinged Andy on this idea?

How long ago was that?

It would be really nice to hear from Andy about the future of CamBam.  I like the program and have purchased 4 seats so far.  However everyone is aware of existing bugs and there is certainly a lot more functionality that could be added.  I am guessing that that CamBam still generates revenue for Andy but I really can't understand why it is being left to die when so many people seem to want it to thrive.  I'd certainly be willing to purchase a new license for a new version, or a maintenance fee, as a way to move it forward, because I a have gotten so much value from CamBam already.

Yes, and it's even more incomprehensible when there's a V1.1 that's been practically finished for years, but has never been released, as well as a V2 pro that's well advanced, but also not released. I've also noticed that Andy is losing existing or potential customers by not responding to their requests or taking weeks to send the licenses.... for me, his behavior is a total mystery...! and since he no longer responds to my emails (since 10/2023), I'm totally in the dark... like you all !!
