Hello,
I make most of my 3D models in Cinema 4D. I am a poor boy and can´t spend 4500 Euro for 3DS Max
Here is a tutorial how I do this with boolean operation in C4D.

Sorry, I don´t know Solid works.
But ViaCad looks simple and good

I made a mould for a tyre a little while ago that had the usual kind of writing on the sidewall, such as make and size.
I used ViaCAD and CamBam to do it and found the whole thing quite interesting to do.

These 2 videos are similar to my previous one in this thread and roughly repeat some of what I did for that job. They show one of the ways to create and get curves and surfaces from ViaCAD into CamBam.

I hope it might be of help.

Martin.

I wish I had taken the time to view this video sooner.  I can think of all kinds of applications.  Do you have other cool ViaCad instructional videos?
Getting started on CNC?  In or passing through my area?
If I have the time I'll be glad to show you a little in my shop.

Right, two more Quentin Tarantino style videos  ;) - I don't think either of them are cool, but there might be the odd nugget of an idea to help someone  :)

The first one shows how to get ViaCAD Pro (v7) to set a toolpath at an angle of -5 degrees, to make a base ramp and then create a series of cutting depth increments of 0.4mm from it. It then shows a surface being used to trim the lines flush in the X,Y plane, so as to eliminate the 'air cuts' in the early stages of machining, as CamBam will be using the Engraving MOP for processing them.

Video two just shows how the lines and curves are used to create the toolpath.
Just note that the order you select the polylines within the MOP is important, as that is the order they will be machined by CamBam.

Actually very useful, although I did already discover the trick of positioning a polyline and engraving to get a tool path using 2.5D that was difficult to achieve without going to 3D otherwise.  In many cases the (like a tool width slot) it really can't be done efficiently with 3D.

Is there a mapping method tutorial like this around for Solid Works?

Thank you.  For those who don't want to listen to their pop-up blocker going off here is the same solidworks video directly on You Tube.
