4oz (apx) Lead Decoy Anchor Mold

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is aimed towards making a lead mold for decoy anchors. The only issue I see is that for some reason my "hole" seems to be .124". This may be a little small for some types of rubber anchor cord. Hey... wadda ya want for free. LOL.

Attached are STEP files, STL files, and a CamBam File. Use whatever is useful to you

P.S.  I am cutting the first one right now.  If it comes out +/- .25 oz I will be thrilled.

I think it will actually be a little over, but some things are hard to measure.

If it comes out -.25 to +.5 I will be ok with it.

Obviously the exact alloy will make a difference.  These will be done with a hard alloy like linotype and wheel weights, so it will be a tad lighter than say salvaged X-ray lead which is nearly pure.

I'm going to head off to the store and see about some spray graphite for a mold release agent.

Some of the anchors I just finished.  I need to do a few more, but I think I am going to hold out for some more linotype lead.  I may sell this mold and make one slightly larger.

With the linotype lead I head they only came out at 3.55 to 3.57 ounces.  With X-Ray lead they came out at 3.77 to 3.80 ounces, but it is much softer lead.  The linotype seemed to pour a little better too.

I guess I messed up the math or forgot to account for something somewhere.

These are awfully shiny.  I would like to coat them, with something dark and flat in color, but I have not decided waht yet.  Maybe just a simple metal primer, flat green enamle, and mat clear coat.  Just rattle can stuff for simplicity.

If you are doing some lead casting, yes the old, "blacken the mold with candle smoke" trick does work.  I had heard that some of the expensive mold release agents for metals where graphite based, so I went and bought some spray on dry graphite lubricant.  I have to say it worked a lot better than candle smoke.  More than half of the anchors fell out, and half the rest popped out very very easily.  The only issue I had was that when I sprayed on a second coat (probably unnecessary as the anchors were still popping out easily) I had some little bumps and clumps that I had to blow out when I realized they were affecting my anchors.

Fabulous Blaster.  Less than $5/can at Home Depot.

Hi Bob.  I was playing around with your files to get a feel for a full 3D tool flow.  I am using Viacad v7 and an eval copy of Cambam.  When I import the STL file into Viacad and Cambam, the facets are "quite noticeable".  I did import the STEP model into Viacad and generated finer resolution STL models for CAMBAM.  This is kind of ambiguous question, but how do I know when the STL is fine enough?  I know this heavily depends on the tool shape.  What are some things to look for in the model to help weigh the tradeoffs?  Ideally (I think) CAMBAM would import a smooth STEP model to generate the machine paths.  Maybe I'm thinking about this all wrong or I'm being mislead by my handicapped video card.  :)

Thank your for all of your contributions here.

Sorry, didn't see the reply until now.  The facets are not really noticeable in the actual cut object.  I think its just a matter of efficiency in calculating display properties.
