V-Engrave for Islamic Calligraphy works nicely!
« on: November 24, 2013, 20:32:49 pm »
The v-engrave plugin handled this image very nicely, although regions with holes seemed to need to be treated separately from regions without holes, hence the two MOPs.

The full depth is nearly 12mm, so a pre-pass at lesser depth might be in order.

I got this image off the net, so it is probably not something for commercial use.

I have used V-Engrave a few times but it seemed to slow, even at 30 or 40 ipm. I usually use F-Engrave but would like to  use CamBam so I can do other MOP's together. Does the plugin run that slow or am I missing something. Any advice on settings that work best will be greatly appreciated.

???

Once g-code is fed to your machine's controller, it's the machine's job to keep up.  Speeds and feeds are only marginally affected by settings like "Exact Stop" vs. "Constant velocity", unless you have tons and tons of very short segments.  Then, constant-velocity makes more sense, if your machine can handle it.

Everything else is _done_ by the time the g-code is generated.

So if it's going slowly, look to your settings before generating code, or look to your control for why.

V-Engrave is an excellent plugin but like macbob say's I've found that if I select a line of text all at once sometimes the toolpaths are wrong, however if I explode the text and select each letter and add their ID's to one MOP it works fine.

The default settings for v-engrave are targeted to engraving, typically on the order of 1/4" tall.  If you're making 3-4" high letters in wood at 30 ipm you'll want to increase the step size.

The other issue is the acceleration parameters in your control.  Lots of sharp little turns will prevent you from ever getting up to full speed.
