e-machine shop has a free CAD program that's very good for 2D and 2.5D drawings.  emachineshop.com

You can add Camotics to the list, just about essential, and there is a plugin for CB on this site for it.
Dave.

Blender is a free 3D modeller and CAD (with a lot of CAD related plugins).
I work since years with C4D for modelling 3D objects, but this is very expensive. The last year I change more and more to blender.
And Sculptris, is now the free version of Zbrush. The name is now Zbrush Core Mini.

I need for my work more a modeller software then a CAD software. 3D modeller may be defined as a separate category.

Mostly use ViaCAD 2D/3D Pro.
Getting started on CNC?  In or passing through my area?
If I have the time I'll be glad to show you a little in my shop.

Great post, I would also add TinkerCAD and BlocksCAD to the list of 3D CAD programs, Meshmixer and Wings 3D to the list of 3D modeling software. You can see more details in these reviews (all3dp and artec3d sites). I hope it will be useful to someone.
