Using CNC to cut out scroll saw pattern
« on: August 29, 2019, 23:45:21 pm »
Trying to figure the best machining option to cutout a pattern (see attached). A pocket would keep the bit inside the area to be cut but I dont need a pocket. Every other machining operation cuts outside the area. Is there a way to cut a pocket and just cut the perimeter? End mill size suggestions? Feeds and speed suggestions?

Hello

You can use a profile operation and select if you want to cut on the internal or external side of the line with the  Inside / Outside  property.

Yeah...it seems like you could just select each 'cavity', and do an "inside profile" on that feature.

You don't have many.

Something like the attached file.

1. use a large tool to rough out the shape, leave a little "roughing clearance"
2. follow with a small tool to get into the corners

Depth of cut, feeds, speeds, depends largely on the machine capability, tool diameter, material being cut.
Also to consider are, desired finish of the cut, how long you want to wait for the job to complete.

Try different setting on some scrap pieces until you get what's right for you.

I didn't set all these values in the attached file but for this job I would use these setting

I used two sizes of tool just to illustrate the roughing and finish method, you could use a 3mm tool only and that's what I would use provided that the corners were not too rounded for my purpose.

1. spindle RPM: 18000
2. Cut Feedrate: 1800
3. depth of cut: with the 6mm tool it should be okay to take a full 3mm depth
I like to use a "lead in move" because the tool may not be designed for straight plunging, plus I like the finish better.
4. with the 2mm tool it takes one full depth pass but we left just 0.5 mm of "roughing clearance" for it to remove however there will be a lot more material left in tight corners so two passes may be required.

That's an interesting piece.  It looks like an artistic rendition.  Maybe a logo.
Getting started on CNC?  In or passing through my area?
If I have the time I'll be glad to show you a little in my shop.
