STEP File problem
« on: September 08, 2020, 18:19:07 pm »
Hi,

I'm new to CamBam and I'm on the demo. I've built a little step file to try out, but when i try to open it, I get 'the given key was not present in the dictionary'. I've built others that seem to work, but this simple one i thought i'd actually in the real world does not. I can save this in various versions of Step, but all give the same result.

The file is very simple. Is a rounded square with a pocket, a hole and a countersunk hole. It seems to load in other viewers etc. Can anyone explain what the problem is please ?

thanks, Kevin

Hello

I tried to open the file on SolidWorks (2010) and as CamBam it won't open it and said "the file is not a step file AP203 or AP214" and "an invalid index as been encountered"

If I read the file under a text editor, I can see that it is AP242 format.

ILE_SCHEMA (('AP242_MANAGED_MODEL_BASED_3D_ENGINEERING_MIM_LF { 1 0 10303 442 1 1 4 }'));
ENDSEC;

If you're able to read it on another software, try to resave it as AP203 or AP214 ; I assume CamBam don't read AP242 as my old Solidworks (AP242 appeared in early 2015)

It opened in Rhino6 okay but after saving it in three different STEP formats it would not open in CamBam.

Exported from Rhino as an STL and it opened okay in CamBam

There may be a simple reason why CamBam does not like the STEP file but I didn't have time to investigate.

Currently CB works well with "solid" object (CSG) but it has still problems with "surface" object (BRep, Bspline) ; maybe it is the reason.

I opened it in Varicad, saved as AP 214 and Cambam open it correctly.  ;D

Yes, same here now with Rhino6. I had to disable parameters I previously had enabled.

Hi, thanks for the replies - I found the problem !.

I had tried it using Step 203 and 214, my last attempt was 242. I'm exporting from Autodesk Inventor, which is i believe a solid modeller.

My CamBam shows
CamBam.CAD: 1.0.7364.41819
CamBam: 1.0.7364.41821

*** here's the problem ***

in the exporter options in Inventor there is a checkbox - 'include sketches' which i had checked (un-intentionally). Removing this check box made the problem go away !
